#ItsNotJustHair

Hair plays a crucial part in our identity. It is both so personal and so public, a form of self-expression and a reflection of our health and wellbeing.

But did you know that less than 45% of women go through life with a full head of hair? It is a reality seldom spoken of yet has a significant toll on mental health of many. This is particularly true of women, with 52% feeling ‘extremely upset’ by their hair loss, compared to just 28% of men. There have even been extreme cases such as the tragedy in December 2020 where a 29-year-old A&E doctor named Dr Alicia Pylypczuk died by suicide after living with alopecia and depression for over a decade.

Unfortunately, there is little mental health support offered to those dealing with hair loss, but our favourite hair care brand Monpure which have launched a campaign to normalise hair loss in women and empower those struggling with it.

#ItsNotJustHair has 3 objectives:

1. Raising awareness and erasing the stigma

The feature film #ItsNotJustHair explores the impact of female hair loss through the eyes of five women going through it- expressing their deeply personal accounts of their hair loss journeys as well as their views on how society treats women with this condition. Monpure is the first luxury brand to work with women who are experiencing real hair loss and alopecia and you can even find them on billboards across London! Over the next few months they’ll be also be hosting a number of Instagram live events and workshops, where you can meet our experts, celebrity guests and #ItsNotJustHair contributors and ask them your female hair loss-related questions. It’s the beginning of a long journey where they hope to change conversations surrounding female hair loss so more women feel supported.

2. Building a support community where everyone with hair loss is welcome

In the Monpure content hub, you’ll find a comprehensive guide to female hair loss, from its causes and treatments, to how to speak to your GP and how to deal with its emotional repercussions. They are also running a separate support community on Instagram (@itsnotjusthair_), where everyone with hair loss is welcome to share their stories in a safe and understanding space. Here they discuss how to deal with hair loss from both a physical and emotional standpoint.

  1. Funding vital research with leading universities

Monpure’s mission to be the main innovators in the field of hair loss and thinning, hence they aim to be at the forefront of scientific research. They are working with academics and scientists who are striving to gain a better understanding of the human hair follicle and the surrounding skin tissues, so that we can get one step closer to solve the challenges surrounding hair loss and thinning – a world first for a haircare brand.
