Scented Candles – Why You Should Switch From Synthetic To Soy
Many of us like nothing more than the comforting scent and glow of our favourite candle. But could this relaxing ritual be causing you more harm than good? It turns out you need to use more than just your nose when it comes to picking out a new addition to your candle collection. So, choose wisely…
We get it, the composition of a candle isn’t the first thing on your mind when you’re out smelling samples. If it smells good, in my basket it goes. However, if you knew a little more about how they were made, you may second guess your favourite scent. Many candles are made from paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, that when burned releases something called VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). VOC’s include a variety of harmful substances. A study published by US researchers found when tested in a laboratory, burning paraffin candles released a range of chemicals from benzene, which can impact respiratory health, to cancer-causing carcinogens. Add this to the fact they may include artificial dyes and fragrances that emit damaging particles into the air. Not so relaxing now, huh? Luckily, if you only light synthetic candles occasionally, they’re unlikely to affect your health. But if you’re a complete candle junkie, fear not. We have the perfect alternative…
Soy-based candles are the future. They’re all natural, eco-friendly and have a clean record, so there’s no need to worry about indoor air pollution. In addition to being a more sustainable option, there is no compromise on smell either. Due to their clean burn, the smell is generally stronger and more pleasant as they are not fuelled by faux fragrances. And although they may be a little more expensive, soy candles tend to burn up to 50% longer than their paraffin counterpart. Plus, you can’t put a price on the safety of your scents.
